Sany plans to put more than 300 million dollars into Egypt’s first wind turbine factory.
China’s Sany Group will invest more than $300 million to build a wind turbine and components plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, according to Asharq, as reported by WAYA on June 1. First-phase output is tied to a planned 1,000 MW wind project in the northern Gulf of Suez. Some major components keep arriving from China until local production lines are fully operational. Egypt’s imports of complete wind turbines and major turbine components exceeded $235 million in 2024.
My read: turbines and their major components carry most of a wind project’s equipment value, and producing them inside Egypt keeps more of that margin in the country.
Egypt is positioning the Suez Canal Economic Zone as a gateway to African and Arab markets, so the plant could export as well as supply Egypt’s own target of more than 42% clean electricity by 2030.
